What Is Uninsured Motorist Coverage?

In simple terms, it is coverage that helps you if you are hit by a driver who does not have any car insurance or if you are in a hit and run situation.

Usually, whenever you get into an accident with another driver, the driver at fault would have to use their auto insurance.  Either to help the other person to pay medical bills or repairs related to the accident. But, if the person at fault does not have insurance or runs away, then you would be out of luck as far as getting money from their insurance.  That is where uninsured motorist coverage comes in so that you have protection from those that don’t.

What Are The Rules For Uninsured Motorist Coverage In Florida?

Sadly, there are no requirements for drivers to have uninsured motorist coverage in Florida.  On the bright side, according to Florida law, all insurance companies selling auto insurance must offer the option for uninsured coverage.  So, as a policyholder, you can decide to reject having uninsured motorist coverage, but let it be known that it is available to you and always recommended..

If you do decide to opt-in for uninsured motorist coverage, there are some things that you should be aware of.  Like if you do choose to have uninsured motorist coverage for multiple vehicles on the same policy, the limit for each has to be the same.  The coverage also cannot be more than the limits of the policy’s bodily injury liability coverage.

Should You Have Uninsured Motorist Coverage?

To make this plain and simple, if you are driving in Florida, then you NEED this coverage.  In 2017 there were 402,385 auto accidents, making it 1,098 crashes each day. Before getting shocked about that, we want you to know that 26.7% of motorists are uninsured and that nearly 25% of auto accidents in Florida involve a hit and run.  There could be up to 550 accidents per day involving either an uninsured motorist or a hit and run. Each case is having no one responsible for paying medical bills or car repairs caused as a result. So even though you are not required by law to have uninsured motorist coverage, we recommend you do so.  The last thing you want are more bills because of a reckless driver that does not have auto insurance. Get yourself protected from crazy drivers like that with a little extra coverage.

We understand that you might have been in an accident previously with a person that was uninsured, or in a hit and run auto accident. With that being said, we would like you to read our articles on No-Fault insurance and Personal Injury Protection to see what benefits you still have.
